From May 2 to May 10, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will embark on a visit to three Caribbean nations: Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. The primary goal of this trip is to enhance India's historical and cultural connections with these countries while discussing bilateral, regional, and global issues.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, Jaishankar is set to meet with leaders from all three nations to discuss various aspects aimed at advancing partnerships between the countries. Notably, the significant role of the Indian indentured community in these nations has been a cornerstone of their relationship.

The visit aims to maintain the momentum of India's political engagement with these countries and deepen the longstanding friendly ties. This reflects a shared commitment to South-South cooperation and development, paving the way for progress and prosperity between India and these nations.

During his visit, Jaishankar will also engage with key business leaders and members of the Indian diaspora. Over time, India has been strengthening its ties with these countries to solidify the foundation for prosperous bilateral relations.

At the core of India's foreign policy is the friendship and mutual development with Caribbean nations, marking a significant step for the Indian community as well.

This trip seeks to add a new chapter to the previous meetings and collaborations established by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with these countries. For instance, during the second India-CARICOM Summit held in Georgetown, Guyana, in November 2024, Modi had bilateral discussions with Suriname's President Chandrika Prasad Santokhi, focusing on development, trade, and enhancing people-to-people connections.

Recently, Prime Minister Modi also initiated special projects, such as the launch of the 'Jamaica Route,' symbolizing the strong and friendly relations between India and Jamaica. At the time of this inauguration, Jamaica's counterpart Andrew Holness visited India.

India's relationships with these nations extend beyond politics to encompass trade and culture. Recently, Modi announced that the Indian-origin community residing in Trinidad and Tobago would be granted Overseas Citizenship of India cards, providing another opportunity for these individuals to connect with India.

Through this visit, Minister Jaishankar and the Indian government are taking another significant step to ensure a robust and stable role in the Caribbean region.
