United Nations, July 14: On Monday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held discussions with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding various global hotspots.
Jaishankar highlighted India's collaboration with the UN in a post shared on X.
During their meeting, they addressed significant global issues, including those in West Asia, Ukraine, and Sudan.
He emphasized the importance of India-UN cooperation in their dialogue.
The escalating tensions in West Asia, particularly between the US and Iran, are particularly concerning for India, which relies heavily on energy supplies from the Strait of Hormuz.
Jaishankar's visit to New York was brief, aimed at promoting India's candidacy for the upcoming Security Council elections.
Following the event where he outlined India's agenda for the Council, he met with Guterres at a time when global conflicts and instability are on the rise.
Addressing delegates and diplomats responsible for electing a representative for the Asia-Pacific region for the 2028 term, he stated, “In a world filled with conflicts, India advocates for dialogue and diplomacy, striving to bridge divides.”
He also mentioned India's commitment to alleviating the effects of these global developments on the Global South.
Jaishankar introduced a six-point manifesto focused on Shanti, which stands for “Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust (and) Integrity.”
The discussions revolved around urgent international crises and the ongoing partnership between India and the UN on various global matters.
India is set to compete in next year's UN General Assembly elections for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the 2028–2029 term, which would mark its ninth term as an elected member of the 15-member Council.
