India's External Affairs Minister Begins Gulf Tour Amidst Regional Changes
S. Jaishankar's Visit to Qatar
In light of the rapidly evolving political landscape in West Asia, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has commenced a six-day tour of Gulf nations, starting with Qatar from July 5 to July 10. On Sunday, he engaged in discussions with Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The high-level meeting focused on enhancing energy, trade, investment, and strategic partnerships between the two nations.
Jaishankar's visit to the Gulf comes at a pivotal moment, following an agreement aimed at de-escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, which has led to significant political shifts in the region.
Strengthening Ties and Community Welfare
During his time in Qatar, Jaishankar expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for ensuring the safety and welfare of the Indian community. He shared on social media, stating, "We reviewed various aspects of our bilateral cooperation, particularly in energy, trade, investment, connectivity, security, and people-to-people relations. We also discussed new opportunities to further strengthen our strategic partnership."
The discussions also touched on the conflicts in West Asia and their implications. Jaishankar met with representatives of the Indian community, emphasizing their commitment and contributions to Qatari society during these challenging times.
Future Engagements and Regional Diplomacy
Jaishankar acknowledged the valuable insights and suggestions from the Indian community to bolster India-Qatar relations. Throughout his current trip, he is set to meet with counterparts and top leaders from four Gulf nations, aiming to reinforce bilateral ties and exchange views on regional developments and mutual interests.
Following weeks of escalating tensions, Qatar and Oman have emerged as mediators in efforts to establish a ceasefire in Iran. Indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran are expected to continue in Doha after the week-long funeral rites for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
After concluding his Gulf tour, Jaishankar will head to New York on July 13 to launch India's official campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-29 term.
Upcoming Meetings in Brussels
Subsequently, he will participate in the third India-European Union Trade and Technology Council meeting in Brussels on July 14-15, where he will engage in discussions with his EU and Belgian counterparts.
