India's Defense Production Reaches Record High Amid Budget Increase
Significant Growth in Defense Production
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh announced that India's annual defense production has soared to a record ₹1.78 lakh crore for the fiscal year 2025-26, showcasing a substantial enhancement in the country's indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities. This announcement coincides with India's defense budget for 2026-27, which has been raised to an unprecedented ₹7.85 lakh crore, reflecting a 15.3% increase from the previous year's budget of ₹6.81 lakh crore. Notably, defense public sector undertakings (DPSUs) and other public sector units contributed approximately 76% to the total production value.
Steady Increase Under Modi's Leadership
While presenting the statistics, Singh highlighted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India's defense production has been on a consistent rise. He noted that the annual defense production for FY 2025-26 has reached an all-time high of ₹1.78 lakh crore, marking a 15.6% increase from last year's production of ₹1.54 lakh crore. Singh emphasized the long-term growth in this sector, revealing that defense production has surged by 110% since FY 2020-21, when it stood at ₹84,643 crore.
Fourfold Increase Over the Decade
Rajnath Singh stated that defense production in the country has nearly quadrupled over the past decade. The value of domestic defense production has escalated from ₹43,746 crore in FY 2013-14 to the current levels, indicating the expansion of India's defense industrial base. He attributed this growth to the collaborative efforts of the defense production department and all stakeholders involved in the sector. Singh shared on social media that the defense production has increased almost fourfold since FY 2013-14, underscoring the significant advancements made in recent years.
Private Sector's Contribution at an All-Time High
In FY 2025-26, the contribution of the private industry to India's defense production reached an unprecedented ₹42,000 crore, highlighting their growing role in military manufacturing. This increase occurred amidst the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen indigenous design, development, and production capabilities in the defense sector. The rise in domestic manufacturing has also boosted India's defense exports, which reached a record ₹38,424 crore this fiscal year.
