India's Defense Export Growth

India is not merely purchasing weapons; it is showcasing the strength of 'Make in India' to the world. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has shared figures that reflect a historic achievement. In the fiscal year 2025-26, India's defense exports reached a record ₹38,424 crores. Comparing this to the previous fiscal year 2024-25, the growth trajectory resembles that of a rocket. From ₹3,622 crores in 2024-25 to ₹38,424 crores in 2025-26, this marks a net increase of ₹14,802 crores, translating to a remarkable growth rate of 62.66%. Such a leap in exports within a year is considered nearly impossible for any country, especially in the defense sector. Over the past five years, India's defense exports have nearly tripled, signifying not just numbers but a growing trust in India's engineering and indigenous technology.

Performance of Government and Private Defense Companies

This year's headlines prominently feature the performance of government defense firms like HAL and Bharat Electronics Limited, which have seen a staggering 151% increase in exports. The previous year's exports stood at ₹8,389 crores, while this year they reached ₹21,171 crores, marking a 54.84% rise. Private companies such as Tata Advanced Systems and L&T have also maintained their strength, contributing ₹17,353 crores, which accounts for approximately 45.16% of total exports. The private sector has experienced a 14% increase compared to last year. This indicates that India's defense ecosystem is now functioning like a balanced engine, with major companies selling large weapons and private firms actively participating in this race. The data clearly illustrates the significant advancements made in this sector, with India exporting defense equipment to over 80 countries.

Diverse Export Portfolio

India's export portfolio includes a wide range of countries, from smaller nations to developed ones. Notably, the BrahMos missile deal with countries like the Philippines has positioned India among the elite club of long-range missile producers. The Akash defense system has garnered interest from several Middle Eastern and African nations. Additionally, the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher is attracting attention from various countries. Importantly, India has emerged as one of the leading manufacturers of radar systems and personal protective gear, with numerous countries receiving these advanced equipment. Furthermore, the number of companies engaged in exports has increased from 128 to 145, indicating the entry of new players into the market.

Strategic Planning Behind the Growth

This remarkable growth is not a result of overnight success but rather a well-thought-out strategy. The government has simplified online portals and standard operating procedures, eliminating the need for companies to navigate through government offices for end-user certificates and export authorizations. A list of over 500 defense items has been released, banning imports of these products in India. This move has led to an increase in domestic procurement, with the Indian Army now testing 'Make in India' products. Consequently, India's brand value in the global market has significantly improved.
