India's Defence Boost: Tata Advanced Systems Partners with Javelin Joint Venture for Missile Production
Strengthening India's Defence Production
New Delhi: Tata Advanced Systems Ltd has entered into a significant agreement with the Javelin Joint Venture (JJV) to co-produce Javelin missile systems within India, aligning with the nation's goal of enhancing domestic defence manufacturing.
The JJV is a collaboration between Raytheon, a business unit of RTX, and Lockheed Martin.
This co-production announcement follows the Indian Army's recent acquisition of US-made Javelin anti-tank guided missile systems.
Tata Advanced Systems has been designated as the primary partner for future co-production initiatives in India.
The companies have formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at producing the Javelin All Up Round (AUR) domestically.
The AUR represents a fully assembled missile contained within its tactical launch container.
As part of the MoU, Tata Advanced Systems and JJV will investigate the creation of a facility for final assembly and integration of the Javelin AUR, along with component production capabilities in India.
This partnership is expected to bolster the production of the Javelin system, offering unique opportunities for the Indian industry and enhancing regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
The co-production initiative will benefit the India-US relationship by fostering a robust defence workforce in India while also maintaining American jobs through the multi-year production of sub-assembly kits at Lockheed Martin's facility in Troy, Alabama, and guidance electronics units (GEU) at Raytheon's Tucson, Arizona facility.
These sub-assembly kits and GEUs will be transported to India for final assembly and integration.
Establishing in-country co-production will fortify India's defence industrial base by enabling the final assembly and integration of the Javelin AUR at local facilities, generating high-tech employment, enhancing local manufacturing skills, and supporting global supply chain resilience amid rising worldwide demand.
The agreement is also anticipated to improve regional security in the Indo-Pacific by ensuring a dependable, locally sourced supply of the established Javelin weapon system, facilitating quicker deployment and sustained readiness for allied nations in the region.
This collaboration signifies a deeper strategic partnership between the JJV and Indian entities, promoting interoperability and joint defence initiatives that align with broader Indo-Pacific partnership goals.
The increased production volume from this co-production effort can assist the US government in achieving economic order quantities, thereby enhancing affordability and creating significant cost-saving opportunities for programs that support JJV production.
"Collaborating with Tata Advanced Systems Limited to set up a dedicated Javelin final assembly and integration facility in India is a crucial step in ensuring a resilient supply chain for this essential anti-tank weapon system," stated Rich Liccion, vice president of JJV and program director at Lockheed Martin Javelin.
"This partnership not only broadens India's high-tech manufacturing capabilities but also strengthens a more stable security framework across the Indo-Pacific region, enabling our global partners to respond swiftly to emerging threats," Liccion added.
