India's Bold Move: Pioneering Critical Mineral Exploration to Boost Domestic Supply Chains
Strengthening India's Mineral Exploration Efforts
New Delhi: The Indian government is intensifying its initiatives to tap into critical minerals, foster mining startups, and establish robust domestic supply chains to lessen reliance on imports, as stated by Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh on Thursday.
During a meeting of the governing body of the National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust (NMET), the minister emphasized the urgency of accelerating exploration efforts, particularly for vital minerals like lithium, which are essential for modern technologies.
Dr. Singh remarked, “India is actively enhancing its exploration of critical minerals, fostering a startup-centric mining ecosystem, and developing strong domestic value chains to minimize import reliance.”
He pointed out that India's exploration strategies should align with both global market demands and national strategic interests.
The minister cited ongoing projects in areas like the Siwana belt in Rajasthan and the Salal–Haimna block in Jammu and Kashmir, advocating for the expansion of such initiatives into other promising regions.
“It is crucial for India to cultivate a supportive environment for domestic companies and startups to engage in the mining and critical minerals sector,” he asserted.
Highlighting the achievements of the biotechnology startup sector, he suggested that similar institutional backing, targeted incentives, and mentorship could drive innovation in mining technologies and exploration techniques.
Dr. Singh also stressed the importance of enhancing the capabilities of private exploration firms for the sustainable growth of the sector.
The government is prioritizing the acceleration of project timelines by streamlining approval processes and tackling challenges like forest clearances that frequently hinder exploration activities.
He noted that improved coordination among various authorities will be vital to sustain progress.
“To keep exploration activities on track, we need quicker approvals, enhanced procurement systems, and timely pre-exploration clearances,” the minister emphasized.
“To reduce import dependency, it is essential to develop comprehensive domestic supply chains, including processing and value addition,” he concluded.
