India's Batting Collapse: A Historic Low Despite Three Centuries Against England
India's Disappointing Innings at Headingley
In the first Test match against England at Headingley, Leeds, India struggled to make the most of three impressive centuries, ultimately finishing their first innings at 471 runs on the second day. This performance has now placed them in the record books for the lowest total in an innings where three players scored centuries.
Previously, the record for the lowest total with three centuries was held by South Africa, who managed 475 runs against England at Centurion in 2016.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), Shubman Gill (147), and Rishabh Pant (134) were the standout performers for India, contributing a total of 382 runs. However, the remaining Indian batsmen could only muster 58 runs, with 31 of those coming as extras.
The list of lowest all-out totals featuring three individual hundreds now includes: 471 by India against England at Headingley in 2025, and 475 by South Africa against England at Centurion in 2016.
Gill was the top scorer for India, while England's Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue combined to take eight wickets, helping their team regain momentum after lunch.
Earlier in the day, Rishabh Pant's remarkable century had propelled India to 454/7 before lunch. Stokes claimed his fourth wicket of the innings by dismissing Shardul Thakur for just one run just before the break. Tongue's crucial wicket of Pant at 134 was a significant moment for England.
Shubman Gill, who began the day not out on 127, was eventually caught out after a captain's innings of 147 in the 102nd over.
India resumed the second day at 359/3, with Gill and Pant at the crease. They crossed the 400-run mark in the 96th over without losing a wicket during the drinks break. Pant celebrated his seventh Test century with a six in the 100th over, surpassing former captain MS Dhoni for the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper.
Brief score: India 454/7 (Shubman Gill 147, Rishabh Pant 134; Ben Stokes 4/66) against England.
