Sitanshu Kotak, the batting coach for India, shared insights regarding team selection as they prepare for a critical Super Eight match against Zimbabwe in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The vice-captain, Axar Patel, was absent from the previous match against South Africa due to a tactical choice, with Washington Sundar stepping in for him. He acknowledged that changes are possible and emphasized the importance of discussions regarding the team composition. He noted, "There can be changes, yes. And obviously, it goes without saying that we discuss. Because there are two lefty openers, number three is left-handed, and the opposition has its bowling options." He also mentioned that the team needs to be cautious about losing wickets early in the innings.
Speculation Surrounding Sanju Samson's Role
There is ongoing speculation that Sanju Samson might take the place of Tilak Varma in the playing XI. Abhishek Sharma, currently the World No. 1 T20I batter, has struggled significantly, managing only 15 runs across four matches, including three ducks. Ahead of the crucial game against Zimbabwe, Kotak was questioned about Samson's potential participation, especially since he was seen practicing in the nets. Kotak clarified that net sessions do not necessarily indicate final lineup decisions, stating, "So, one thing that normally in every net Abhishek does not bat to start with. He always bats in a second or third pair." He added that while there is consideration for Samson's inclusion, net practice alone does not determine the final team.
