FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad is set to host the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers - Window 3, where the Indian men's basketball team will compete against two strong Asian teams at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex from July 2 to July 5.
As per a statement from the Gujarat Chief Minister's Office, India will kick off its qualification journey against Qatar on July 2, followed by a match against Lebanon on July 5, both of which are critical for their qualification hopes.
Ahmedabad's Emergence as a Sports Destination
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi highlighted Ahmedabad's growing reputation as a key sports hub, noting its ability to host significant international events across various sports. The city is gearing up for another major tournament—the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers—just a week after successfully organizing the AVC Men's Volleyball Cup at the same venue. The AVC Men's Volleyball Cup took place in Ahmedabad from June 20 to 28, 2026, marking India's inaugural hosting of this tournament.
"Ahmedabad is quickly becoming a top-tier sports destination. The fact that we are hosting another major international basketball event so soon after the Asian Volleyball Championship showcases Gujarat's excellent sports infrastructure and our dedication to promoting international sporting events in the state," stated Harsh Sanghavi.
India's Journey in the Qualification Process
These matches are part of India's efforts in the Asian Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. Under the guidance of head coach Scott Flemming, the Indian team is in a rebuilding phase, focusing on nurturing young talent and gaining essential international exposure. Currently ranked 76th globally and 14th in Asia according to the latest FIBA rankings, India aims to improve its performance following a tough start to the qualification series.
Home Advantage and Key Players
Playing in Ahmedabad is expected to provide a significant advantage as the team strives to perform well against seasoned rivals. The Indian roster includes several standout players such as Kanwar Sandhu, Pranav Prince, Princepal Singh, and Harsh Dagar, who have shown promise in recent international matches.
Basketball fans are anticipated to come out in large numbers to support the national team during this four-day international basketball event, with both matches being crucial for India's aspirations in Asian basketball.
