India's Air Force Poised for Major Rafale Fighter Jet Acquisition
Significant Development for Indian Air Force
A pivotal advancement has emerged regarding the Indian Air Force's (IAF) combat capabilities and squadron strength. According to media reports, France is expected to officially respond to India's request for the purchase of 114 Rafale fighter jets by mid-August this year. This request was sent by India to France in May, and French officials have requested until mid-August to review it.
Negotiations to Follow France's Response
Following France's reply, discussions are anticipated between New Delhi and Paris. The letter of request (LoR) sent by India aims to initiate negotiations for a government-to-government (G2G) deal concerning the acquisition of 114 Rafale jets for the IAF.
Domestic Manufacturing Boost
Under this proposal, 94 of the aircraft will be manufactured in India in collaboration with a local company by France's Dassault Aviation, significantly enhancing domestic aerospace manufacturing.
Importance of the Acquisition for IAF
This procurement is deemed crucial for the IAF, especially as older aircraft, including various variants of Russian-origin MiG fighters, are being retired. The ongoing delays in incorporating indigenous platforms like the LCA Mark 1A and the upcoming LCA Mark 2 have led to a continuous decline in the number of IAF squadrons.
Expansion of the Rafale Fleet
The IAF and the Indian Navy have already placed orders for a total of 62 Rafale jets. If the deal for 114 aircraft is finalized, the total number of Rafale jets in India's fleet will rise to 176. Additionally, the Indian Navy has expressed interest in acquiring 31 more Rafale jets for maritime operations, potentially bringing the total Rafale count to over 200.
Strengthening IAF's Capabilities
This proposal is part of the Ministry of Defence's broader efforts to enhance the IAF's combat capabilities. Shortly after Rajesh Kumar Singh took over as Defence Secretary in 2024, the ministry conducted a comprehensive review of the IAF's operational requirements. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) had approved the proposal for the purchase of 114 Rafale fighters over four months ago, paving the way for the next phase of negotiations. Last month, France indicated its full agreement on technology transfer (ToT) for the Rafale jets and the integration of Indian-made weapons and systems into these aircraft. French sources noted that 'Make in India' will be a crucial aspect of this deal.
