Indian Youth Boxing Team Shines at World Boxing Futures Cup 2026
Strong Start for Indian Youth Boxers
The Indian Youth boxing squad kicked off its journey at the World Boxing Futures Cup 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday, achieving notable victories on the tournament's first day. Joyshree Devi Chirom, Ambekar Meetei Lairenlakpam, and Sahil Duhan all emerged victorious.
Impressive Wins on Opening Day
In the women's 54kg division, Joyshree Devi Chirom triumphed with a Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) victory in the second round against her Tajikistani rival, as reported by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).
On the men's side, Ambekar Meetei Lairenlakpam (50kg) and Sahil Duhan (60kg) also started their tournaments successfully, both winning by unanimous decision with scores of 5-0 against competitors from the Philippines and China, respectively.
Aiming for Youth Olympic Qualification
The Indian team is participating in the Youth Olympic weight categories, making this tournament a crucial step towards qualification and preparation for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games.
Running from March 8 to 15, the World Boxing Futures Cup gathers some of the most talented young boxers globally, serving as a significant developmental event in the boxing calendar.
Continuing a Legacy of Success
Last year, Indian youth boxers achieved remarkable success at the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain, securing seven medals—four gold, two silver, and one bronze—marking the country's best performance in youth boxing at the continental level.
The Indian team aims to build on this positive momentum as they progress through the preliminary rounds in Bangkok.
