Indian Women's Team Set to Kick Off AFC Women's Asian Cup Journey Against Vietnam
Exciting Start for the Blue Tigresses
The long-awaited moment has arrived. The Indian senior women's national football team is gearing up to commence their AFC Women's Asian Cup Australia 2026 campaign against Vietnam at the Perth Rectangular Stadium this Wednesday. The match is scheduled to start at 16:30 IST, as confirmed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
A Fresh Chance After Previous Setbacks
The Blue Tigresses faced a disappointing end to their World Cup aspirations when they withdrew from the AFC Women's Asian Cup India 2022. However, their impressive performance in last year's qualifiers has provided them with a renewed opportunity. This tournament marks the first instance where India has qualified for the Asian Cup based on merit.
Path to the World Cup
Amelia Valverde, who took over as head coach of the Indian women's team earlier this year, is focused on moving past past disappointments. "That was four years ago. Life has its coincidences, and we are back here with a chance to showcase our abilities. This is a new opportunity for us to represent our team in the best way possible," stated the Costa Rican coach. The AFC Women's Asian Cup serves as a gateway for the 12 participating nations, with the four semi-finalists earning direct spots in the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027. Additionally, two of the four losing quarter-finalists will compete for the remaining two direct qualifiers from Asia, while the other two teams will enter the Play-off Tournament for a chance at the World Cup.
Thorough Preparations and New Beginnings
Ranked 67th in the FIFA standings, the Blue Tigresses have undergone a comprehensive 52-day training camp across three continents in preparation for the Asian Cup. Valverde remarked, "We have put in significant effort over the past weeks, and the team's motivation is high to achieve the best possible outcome for India. Starting in Gurugram, the team then moved to Antalya, Turkiye, before arriving in Perth three weeks ahead of the Asian Cup to acclimatize."
"The preparations have been excellent so far. Our three-week stay here has greatly benefited the team," Valverde added. "We understand our responsibilities, which is to present our best selves on the field."
Respecting the Competition
During the pre-match press conference, Valverde expressed respect for their opponents, Vietnam. "They are a quality team, having participated in the last World Cup, and they have been under the same coach (Mai Duc Chung) for a long time, playing numerous matches together," she noted. "We are fully aware of the challenge ahead, but our focus is on showcasing the best version of the Indian team and ensuring we compete fiercely."
Captain's Assurance
India's captain, Sweety Devi Ngangbam, who experienced the disappointment of 2022, shared her optimism about the Asian Cup. "We have trained thoroughly. The squad is prepared, and we are committed to delivering our best performance at the AFC Women's Asian Cup," she stated. "Arriving here three weeks early was a wise decision by the federation, allowing us to adapt to the weather, and we are now ready for the challenges ahead."
Vietnam's Hopeful Outlook
Vietnam's head coach, Mai Duc Chung, expressed cautious optimism regarding his team's prospects in Australia. "We have prepared well, but we will be up against strong teams," he acknowledged. "We need to match their level. What we have trained for will be displayed on the pitch tomorrow."
"It's hard to predict outcomes, but we are pleased with the squad's readiness," the Vietnamese coach concluded.
