Championship Victory in Auckland

The Indian Women's Hockey Team emerged victorious in the FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup 2025-26, defeating New Zealand 2-0 in the final held in Auckland on Sunday. Navneet Kaur opened the scoring early in the 4th minute, followed by Sunelita Toppo, who extended the lead in the 15th minute. The team's strong defensive performance ensured they maintained their advantage, securing their place in the FIH Hockey Women's Pro League for the upcoming season.


Tournament Highlights and Individual Accolades

Lalremsiami was honored as the 'Player of the Match' in the final, while Deepika shared the title of top scorer of the tournament, netting six goals alongside Ashley Sessa from the USA. This victory marks India's second Nations Cup title, having previously won the inaugural tournament in 2022. Throughout the competition, India remained unbeaten, achieving victories against the USA (3-2), Japan (2-1), and Uruguay (3-2) in Pool A, and a decisive 6-0 win over Chile in the semi-finals.


Recognition and Rewards

In acknowledgment of their achievements, Hockey India announced a cash prize of INR 3 lakh for each player and INR 1.5 lakh for every member of the support staff.

During the final match, New Zealand initially controlled possession, attempting to create scoring opportunities. However, India struck first when Navneet earned a penalty corner, converting it with a powerful shot in the 4th minute. India showcased exceptional transition play, leading to their second goal from a penalty corner, with Sunelita deflecting Deepika's shot in the 15th minute.
