Indian Women's Hockey Team Prepares for World Cup Qualifiers
Aiming for World Cup Glory
As the Indian Women's Hockey Team prepares for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers, 24-year-old midfielder Baljeet Kaur is among those eager to make a significant impact. She expressed, "Our aim is to win and qualify for the World Cup. We want to perform at our best and bring home a medal for our country."
Focused Preparations
Baljeet shared her satisfaction regarding the team's training regimen leading up to the tournament. "The camp was productive, and our training sessions were effective. We focused on various aspects, including shooting, and everything progressed positively," she noted. She emphasized her commitment to improving her fitness before the camp, stating, "Enhancing my fitness was a primary focus, and I dedicated significant effort to that during training."
A Journey Forged by Passion and Community
Baljeet's hockey journey began over ten years ago in her village, Kaka Kandiala, Punjab, while she was in seventh grade. What started as mere curiosity transformed into a profound passion for the sport. "I began playing hockey in 2012 after being inspired by my uncle's daughter, who practiced every morning," she recalled. To pursue her passion seriously, she relocated to a school in Tarn Taran, where she had better training opportunities. Her talent soon led to her selection for the Junior National Camp in 2017, a pivotal moment in her career.
However, her path was not without obstacles. Coming from a humble background, she faced challenges in accessing equipment and resources. "Playing hockey was tough due to financial constraints, but our community supported us by providing sticks and shoes. My siblings and I are grateful for their help during those formative years," she shared.
Navigating a Professional Career
Baljeet made her debut in the senior Indian team in 2022 but acknowledges the ups and downs that have accompanied her journey since then. "Since 2022, I've had my share of being in and out of the team. My focus is on continuous improvement and representing India, which is my sole priority," she explained.
An Aggressive Spirit on the Field
Recognized for her aggressive style and speed in midfield, Baljeet attributes these traits to her inherent personality. "I consider myself an aggressive and fast player. That aggression is innate. When I see someone excel, I feel motivated to match their performance," she stated. Despite facing skepticism from her village, where many believed she should prioritize academics, Baljeet remained steadfast in her pursuit of hockey. "Initially, people advised me to stop playing and focus on studies, but my family supported my passion, which has been invaluable," she added.
India's Qualifier Schedule
India will kick off their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana, against Uruguay on March 8, followed by matches against Scotland and Wales on March 9 and 11, respectively.
