Strong Start for India in World Cup Qualifiers
The Indian Women's Hockey team kicked off their FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026 in Hyderabad, Telangana, with an impressive 4-0 victory against Uruguay at the GMC Balayogi Hockey Ground (Gachibowli Hockey Complex) on Sunday.
Goals were scored by Sunelita Toppo (21'), Ishika (40'), Lalremsiami (49'), and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (58'), as reported in an official release.
First Quarter Highlights
India started the match with vigor, creating numerous circle entries and goal-scoring opportunities. In the 4th minute, they earned their first penalty corner, but Udita's well-executed shot went over the bar, resulting in no goal.
Uruguay attempted to counterattack, but India's solid defense remained steadfast.
The breakthrough came in the 21st minute when Sunelita Toppo capitalized on a rebound from a penalty corner, scoring the first goal of the match. India continued to dominate possession in the second quarter.
Second Half Goals Seal the Victory
In the 36th minute, Navneet Kaur had a clear chance but was denied by Uruguay's goalkeeper Maria Bate.
India's second goal came in the 40th minute when Sakshi Rana set up Ishika, who skillfully placed the ball into the bottom left corner.
Uruguay was awarded a penalty corner shortly after but failed to score.
Lalremsiami scored a remarkable field goal in the 49th minute after a strong run from Rutuja Dadaso Pisal.
With just over two minutes remaining, Rutuja sealed the match with a powerful shot, bringing the final score to 4-0.
