Upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers

The Indian Women's Hockey Team is set to compete in the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026, starting on March 8 in Hyderabad, Telangana, with hopes of securing a spot in the prestigious tournament.

Tournament Structure and Qualification Details

As per Hockey India's announcement, the qualifiers will include eight teams: India, England, Scotland, Korea, Italy, Uruguay, Wales, and Austria. These teams will vie for three qualification spots for the World Cup.

The tournament will award direct World Cup entries to the top three finishers. The upcoming World Cup will feature 16 teams in both men's and women's categories, with nine teams already qualified, making the competition fierce.

The format consists of two pools of four teams each, with the leading two from each pool advancing to the semifinals. The winners of the semifinals and the bronze medal match will automatically qualify for the World Cup. Additionally, the highest-ranked team finishing fourth will also gain entry.

Team India's Strategy and Expectations

India is eager to leverage the home advantage in Hyderabad to deliver an outstanding performance. The team will be led by Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne, who returned to the role earlier this year.

Currently ranked ninth globally, India is the second-highest ranked team in the qualifiers, just behind seventh-ranked England. With a robust squad and the benefit of home support, the team is determined to seize this opportunity to qualify for the World Cup.

India's first match will be against Uruguay on March 8, followed by games against Scotland and Wales on March 9 and March 11, respectively.

Historical Context of India's World Cup Participation

The Indian Women's Hockey Team has participated in eight editions of the FIH Hockey Women's World Cup and is aiming for their ninth appearance. Their best result was a fourth-place finish in the inaugural tournament held in 1974.
