Indian Women's Hockey Team Aims for Improvement After World Cup Progress
Coach Sjoerd Marijne's Insights
Sjoerd Marijne, the head coach of the Indian women's hockey team, expressed satisfaction with the team's recent performance but emphasized the need for further enhancement. He stated, "We are pleased, but we aspire for more progress."
These comments followed India's advancement to the second round of the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026, where they secured a 0-0 draw against England in their final Pool D match, finishing second to China. The team entered the match aware that a draw would suffice for progression, yet they played with a competitive spirit rather than merely aiming for a tie. In the first quarter, India earned three penalty corners but failed to convert any, alongside several missed opportunities for field goals, as noted by ESPN.
Call for Enhanced Consistency
In a video shared by Hockey India on X, Marijne highlighted the necessity for improved quality and consistency in ball possession, particularly in maintaining the passing standards exhibited during the initial two quarters. He remarked that if the team can sustain that level throughout the match, they can compete with any global team. While he commended the young debutants for managing the pressure effectively, he reiterated the desire for more improvement. "We fell short in quality when in possession. Initially, our passing was excellent, but we need to maintain that standard throughout the game. If we can replicate our performance from the first two quarters in every quarter, we can match any team globally. For now, I am pleased with how they are handling the pressure, especially the debutants," he stated.
Defensive Strengths and Penalty Corners
Marijne acknowledged India's strong defensive performance and their ability to defend penalty corners, asserting that these strengths are crucial in challenging matches. He noted the need for the team to be more effective with penalty corners, especially after earning 12 against England, while also crediting England for their solid defense. "In matches like these, you must rely on your defense and penalty corner defense. We did that today, but there are areas for improvement. With 12 penalty corners, we should aim to convert at least two or three. Today, while Deepika and Navneet executed well, England's defense was also commendable. We need to move forward without dwelling on missed opportunities," he explained.
India's next challenge will be against the Netherlands in the first match of the second pool phase on Friday evening.
