Following a remarkable fifth-place finish at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup held in Belgium and the Netherlands, the Indian women's hockey team has set off for Japan to compete in the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026. The team, under the leadership of captain Salima Tete and coach Sjoerd Marijne, departed from Bengaluru on Tuesday, with aspirations of clinching the gold medal and securing a direct spot at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Revitalization Under Coach Marijne
The upcoming Asian Games mark a significant phase in the Indian women's hockey team's resurgence, guided by Marijne, who rejoined the program earlier this year and was appointed Chief Coach in January 2026. His focus has been on enhancing fitness levels, fostering team cohesion, and establishing a robust collective identity as the team prepares for the Olympic cycle, as stated in a press release from Hockey India.
Recent Achievements
The team's progress has been evident in their recent performances. They kicked off their 2026 campaign by winning a silver medal at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, remaining unbeaten until the final and securing World Cup qualification with a 1-0 victory over Italy in the semi-finals.
Subsequently, India showcased a dominant performance at the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup in Auckland, where they remained undefeated. The team triumphed over the USA, Japan, and Uruguay in the group stage, defeated Chile 6-0 in the semi-finals, and clinched the title with a 2-0 win against hosts New Zealand. This victory also earned India a spot in the FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League for the next season.
Historic World Cup Performance
The momentum from these victories carried into the World Cup, where India delivered one of its best performances in decades. Finishing fifth, the team achieved its highest World Cup result since the inaugural tournament in 1974, with only one defeat, draws against higher-ranked teams like China, England, and Australia, a 6-1 win over South Africa, and a concluding 3-1 victory against World No. 5 Germany.
Focus on Asian Games Gold and Olympic Qualification
With this confidence, the Indian team is now focused on the Asian Games, where the stakes are high. According to the FIH’s qualification system for the LA 2028 Olympics, the top eligible team in the women’s hockey event at the 2026 Asian Games will secure an Olympic quota, provided they haven't qualified through other means. Thus, India's objective is clear: to win the gold medal at the Asian Games and ensure direct qualification for the 2028 Olympics.
Asian Games Match Schedule
India has been placed in Pool B, competing against Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and Uzbekistan. The team will commence its campaign against Uzbekistan on September 20, followed by matches against Indonesia on September 21, Thailand on September 23, Japan on September 25, and Singapore on September 27. The knockout stage will begin on September 30, with semi-finals on the same day, culminating in the gold medal match on October 2.

Captain Salima Tete, who has led the team to the Nations Cup title and a historic fifth-place finish at the World Cup, expressed the team's determination to build on their recent successes. The Indian squad features a blend of seasoned players such as Savita, Navneet Kaur, Neha, Nikki Pradhan, Lalremsiami, and Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, alongside a promising group of younger talents who have made their mark in recent international competitions. The 20-member squad includes two goalkeepers (Savita, Bichu Devi Kharibam), five defenders (Ishika Chaudhary, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Lalthantluangi, Jyoti, Shilpi Dabas), six midfielders (Nikki Pradhan, Sakshi Rana, Sunelita Toppo, Salima Tete (C), Neha, Deepika Soreng), and seven forwards (Lalremsiami, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Navneet Kaur, Deepika, Ishika, Baljeet Kaur, Beauty Dungdung).
