Indian Women's Archery Team Clinches Gold at World Cup
Historic Victory for Indian Archers
On Sunday, the Indian women's recurve archery team, comprising Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat, and Kumkum Mohod, triumphed over the host nation and strong contenders China to secure the gold medal at the second stage of the Archery World Cup. In a thrilling final, India initially took the lead by winning the first set, but China fought back to level the match. With the scores tied after the scheduled four sets, a shoot-off was necessary.
Decisive Moments Lead to Gold
The Indian trio maintained their composure during critical moments, achieving a score of 54 in the shoot-off. Veteran archer Deepika played a pivotal role by scoring nine crucial points under pressure, earning India its first World Cup gold medal since 2021. Earlier, the team had caused a significant upset by defeating the ten-time Olympic champions, South Korea, in the semifinals. Deepika, who was part of the winning team in Guatemala City and Paris in 2021, has now accumulated seven World Cup team gold medals since 2010.
First World Cup Medal in Three Years
This victory marks the Indian women's recurve team's first World Cup medal in three years. Previously, the team reached the podium in Paris during stage four in 2023, where Ankita was a medal-winning member. India has already secured two medals in Shanghai, with compound archer Sahil Jadhav winning a bronze medal on Saturday, opening the country's medal tally.
Focus on Simranjeet Kaur
Recurve archer Simranjeet Kaur is set to compete in the semifinals later in the day, needing a victory to claim her first World Cup medal. Amid ongoing disputes regarding appointments and the absence of a full-time national coach, it was the experienced Deepika who stepped up to lead and consistently motivate her teammates.
India's Early Lead and China's Comeback
Prabhul Dange was appointed as the women's recurve coach after his protégé Kumkum topped the national trials, but he remained largely in the background while Deepika guided the team through the pressure of home crowds and vocal Chinese support staff. Initially, India appeared to be in control against the Chinese team, which included debutants Zhu Jingyi, Huang Yuwei, and Yu Qiu, but after winning the first set, they allowed the opposing team to make a comeback.
China's Strong Recovery
In the final moments, Deepika, shooting last for the Indian team, scored ten points consecutively, helping India secure the first set despite fluctuating performances from Ankita and the 17-year-old Kumkum. Deepika continued her excellent form in the second set, scoring another perfect ten, allowing India to take a one-point lead after three shots. However, China made a strong comeback in the second set, scoring 55 points with two nines and a ten in their last three arrows.
India on the Brink of Defeat
Ankita scored nine points, but Kumkum managed only eight, putting pressure on Deepika to score ten to equalize. Unfortunately, the four-time Olympian could only muster seven points, resulting in India losing that set 52-55, allowing China to level the match. The host team then won the third set 57-56, establishing a 42-point lead. Despite Deepika scoring two tens in the fourth set, India found itself on the verge of defeat.
Match Goes to Shoot-Off
Kumkum's final arrow scored seven points, bringing India to a total of 54. For China to win, they needed to score two tens and a nine with their last three arrows. Zhu and Huang both scored perfect tens, leaving 18-year-old Yu Qiu needing nine points to secure victory, but she only managed eight, allowing India to win the set and push the match into a shoot-off.
Deepika Seals the Victory
In the shoot-off, the Indian archers delivered their best performances at the crucial moment. Ankita started with a score of nine, while Kumkum impressively scored ten points. When eight points were needed to clinch the title, Deepika maintained her composure and secured nine points, ensuring the team's victory.
