Exciting Return to the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup

The Indian U20 women's national team is gearing up for their opening match against Japan in Thailand, just two weeks away. After a 20-year hiatus, India is set to compete in the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup, with captain Shubhangi Singh leading the team onto the field on April 2.

Mindset and Focus

Shubhangi has already embraced the significance of their qualification. The celebrations in Myanmar, marking the end of a two-decade wait, have transitioned into a focused mindset. "We approached the qualifiers with the belief that we would succeed, and we did," she stated.

Group Stage Matches

The team is aware of the challenges ahead, facing Japan on April 2 at 18:30 IST, followed by matches against Australia on April 5 at 14:30 IST, and Chinese Taipei on April 8 at 14:30 IST in Group C. The top two teams and the two best third-placed teams will advance to the quarter-finals, with the quarter-final winners qualifying for the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Poland in 2026.

Training and Preparation

Currently training in Kolkata, the Young Tigresses will leave for Bangkok on March 20. Shubhangi emphasized, "Our focus is on the three challenging group matches ahead. We are prepared for tough competition and will play additional preparatory matches before the Asian Cup."

Extensive Training Regimen

The team's preparation has been thorough, including a month-long camp in Sweden earlier this year and several international friendlies against Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. These experiences have equipped the team with the skills needed for high-intensity football.

Learning from Experience

A significant defeat against Hammarby IF, a top Swedish club, served as a crucial learning moment. "The 0-6 loss was tough, but it taught us valuable lessons. We improved in subsequent matches, achieving wins and a draw, culminating in a 5-2 victory against Alvsjo AIK," Shubhangi reflected.

Testing Against Central Asian Teams

Prior to their time in Sweden, the Young Tigresses faced Central Asian teams, securing wins against Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Shubhangi noted, "Competing against physically strong teams like Uzbekistan was beneficial for our development."

Team Cohesion and Growth

The continuity within the squad has fostered strong bonds and understanding. Training sessions in Bengaluru and Kolkata have focused on tactics for the Asian Cup, enhancing both individual and team growth.

New Coaching Philosophy

Under head coach Joakim Alexandersson, the team has adopted a more aggressive playing style. Shubhangi remarked, "His approach encourages us to take risks and enjoy the game, which has positively impacted our performance."

Facing Japan's Strength

India's first match is against Japan, a formidable opponent with a history of success in the U20 Asian Cup. Shubhangi acknowledged, "Japan is a strong team, but we are determined to showcase our capabilities."

Goals for the Tournament

For many players, this tournament represents a significant milestone in their careers. Shubhangi expressed the team's ambition, stating, "We aim to perform well and qualify for the knockout stages. We appreciate the support from fans in Thailand and India, and we will strive to deliver our best performance."
