Preparations for the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup

As the Indian U20 women's national team gears up for their opening match against Japan in Thailand at the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup, captain Shubhangi Singh emphasizes the need for additional preparatory matches.

Shubhangi reflects on the significance of their qualification, which ended a 20-year wait, and has shifted their focus to the upcoming challenges. "We approached the qualifiers with the mindset to succeed, and we did," she stated. "When you believe in your success, it becomes a reality. This belief is now driving us as we prepare for tough matches ahead."

Asian Cup Match Schedule

India's group stage matches are set against Japan on April 2 at 18:30 IST, Australia on April 5 at 14:30 IST, and Chinese Taipei on April 8 at 14:30 IST. The top two teams from the group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals. The four quarter-final winners will qualify for the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Poland in 2026.

Currently training in Kolkata, the Young Tigresses will leave for Bangkok, Thailand, on the morning of March 20. Shubhangi stated, "Our focus is on the challenging group matches ahead. We don't expect any easy games. We are prepared and eager to perform against top teams. We will also play additional preparatory matches before the Asian Cup, which will be beneficial for us."

Extensive Training and International Experience

The team's preparation for the continental tournament has been thorough and intentional. Earlier this year, they held a month-long training camp in Sweden and played several international friendlies against Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, which have helped them acclimatize to high-intensity football.

Team Cohesion and Development

A defining characteristic of this Indian squad is their continuity. The core group has been together for over a year, enhancing their tactical understanding and team cohesion. After their training in Sweden, they resumed their camp in Kolkata.

"Being together for over a year has fostered strong bonds and improved our understanding on and off the pitch," Shubhangi explained. "We've evolved as individuals and as a team. Our training sessions have focused on tactics for the Asian Cup, emphasizing how we want to play and prepare for specific matches, particularly the first one. The intensity of our training has been high, and the cold weather in Sweden aided our recovery, enhancing our physical readiness."

New Coaching Philosophy

Under the guidance of head coach Joakim Alexandersson, the team has adopted a more proactive playing style. Shubhangi shared, "Since his arrival, our approach has shifted towards a more attacking style. He encourages us to embrace mistakes and express ourselves, reminding us to enjoy the game. This mindset has significantly contributed to our growth and performance."

Facing Japan: A Tough Challenge

India's campaign kicks off against Japan, a formidable opponent with a history of success, having won the U20 Asian Cup six times and reached the finals of the last three U20 World Cups, winning once in 2018. Shubhangi acknowledged, "Japan is a very strong team. Their junior teams mirror their senior team's style, so we know what to expect. However, we cannot approach the game with fear of their strength. We aim to showcase what this Indian team is capable of."

Ambitions and Call for Support

For many players, this tournament represents the pinnacle of their careers thus far. However, Shubhangi and her teammates aspire to achieve more than just participation. "Our goal is to perform well and aim for qualification to the knockout stages. We urge everyone in Thailand and back home in India to support us! Your encouragement means a lot, and we will strive to deliver our best performance," she concluded.
