Support for Indian Armed Forces

The Indian sports community has united to express solidarity with the Armed Forces as tensions escalate between India and Pakistan. On the evening of May 9, Pakistan launched eight missiles into Indian territory in retaliation for Operation Sindoor, which was executed following a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22.

Fortunately, the Indian Armed Forces successfully intercepted the missiles aimed at Jaisalmer, Satwari, Samba, RS Pura, and Arnia, resulting in no casualties and minimal damage. In anticipation of further conflict, blackouts were implemented in areas including Kishtwar, Akhnoor, Samba, Jammu, Amritsar, and Jalandhar.

Counterattacks and Military Response

In retaliation to Pakistan's missile strikes, the Indian Armed Forces targeted key locations in Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore. Explosions were reported near the residence of Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, prompting his evacuation. Reports indicate that Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir is facing internal dissent, with rumors suggesting that Sahir Shahzad Mirza may succeed him.

Sports Figures Honor the Armed Forces

As the Indian Armed Forces continue their defense efforts, prominent sports figures have publicly praised their bravery. Notable athletes such as Rohit Sharma, PV Sindhu, Virender Sehwag, Saina Nehwal, Neeraj Chopra, Harbhajan Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, Kris Srikkanth, and Venkatesh Prasad have commended the military's courage and dedication during this critical time.

Rohit Sharma expressed his pride in the Armed Forces on social media, urging citizens to avoid spreading misinformation: "With every passing moment, I feel extremely proud of our Indian Army, Indian Air Force & Indian Navy. Our warriors are standing tall for our nation’s pride. Stay safe, everyone! #OperationSindoor #JaiHind."

PV Sindhu also shared her thoughts, stating, "To the brave men and women of the Indian Armed Forces — your courage, discipline, and sacrifice are the soul of our nation. In moments like Operation Sindoor, we’re reminded of the silent strength and selfless service that keep our tricolor flying high. India stands with you. Jai Hind."

Reactions from Other Athletes

Neeraj Chopra, the 2021 Olympic champion, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of supporting the Armed Forces: "We are proud of our Brave Indian Armed Forces who are fighting for our nation against Terrorism. Let’s do our part and ensure everyone’s safety during this time."

Former cricketer Virender Sehwag criticized Pakistan for escalating tensions, stating, "War has been chosen by Pakistan when they had an opportunity to keep quiet. Our forces will reply in the most appropriate manner, a manner Pakistan will never forget."

Saina Nehwal and Kris Srikkanth also shared their support, with Saina stating, "Your unwavering service and love for the nation inspire us every day. Thank you for protecting our dreams and our borders. Jai Hind!"

Suspension of IPL Matches

In light of the heightened tensions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the indefinite suspension of the remaining matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

Indian Army's Statement on Recent Attacks

The Indian Army reported that on the night of May 8-9, Pakistan launched multiple drone attacks and engaged in ceasefire violations along the Western Border. The Army successfully repelled these attacks and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the nation's sovereignty, stating, "All nefarious designs will be responded with force."

Earlier, the Indian Army had downed over 50 Pakistani drones during a large-scale counter-drone operation along the Line of Control and International Borders.
