Indian Railways Plans Speed Boost for Long-Distance Trains
Significant Speed Increase for Train Services
In a major development for millions of rail passengers across the nation, Indian Railways is set to enhance the speed of numerous mail and express trains. Reports indicate that the railway board has granted preliminary approval for an ambitious plan aimed at raising the maximum speed of several long-distance trains on key routes from 110 km/h to 130 km/h. This initiative is expected to make rail travel faster, more efficient, and more comfortable for passengers, bringing regular mail and express services closer to the standards of premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Vande Bharat.
Inclusion of Long-Distance Trains
According to railway officials, the proposed upgrades are likely to encompass around 350 to 400 long-distance mail, express, and superfast trains. The focus will primarily be on trains already equipped with modern LHB coaches. These coaches, based on German technology, are designed to operate safely at speeds of up to 160 km/h, making them suitable for high-speed operations once the necessary infrastructure enhancements are completed. This initiative is anticipated to benefit a significant number of passengers who rely on traditional train services for long-distance travel.
Review of Train Schedules
To facilitate the speed enhancement project, Indian Railways has initiated a comprehensive review of train schedules across its entire network. In the first phase, railway officials are identifying routes where infrastructure modernization has either been completed or is nearing completion. This includes sections with upgraded tracks, advanced electronic interlocking systems, and heavy rail tracks capable of handling increased speeds. The review aims to optimize train operations while ensuring that the increased speeds lead to a meaningful reduction in travel times.
Impact on Travel Times
Currently, the maximum operational speed of 130 km/h is mainly limited to premium services such as the Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Duronto Express, and Vande Bharat trains. However, once the proposed plan is implemented, many regular mail and express trains will also be able to operate at this speed on eligible routes. This is expected to significantly reduce travel times for passengers traveling between major cities and states. For long-distance travelers, even a slight increase in average speed could save several hours on certain routes.
