Indian Railways Introduces OTP-Based Instant Reservation System for Enhanced User Experience
Enhancing User Convenience with OTP-Based Reservation
To improve convenience for regular users, Indian Railways has proposed an OTP-based instant reservation system. Initially, in July 2025, the railway introduced Aadhaar-based authentication for online instant ticketing. Following this, an OTP-based online reservation system for all general bookings was implemented in October 2025. Both initiatives have been successfully adopted by users, ensuring greater transparency and ease in the reservation process.
Pilot Project Launch and Expansion
On November 17, 2025, a pilot project for the OTP-based instant reservation system was launched for tickets booked at reservation counters. This system has now been expanded to cover a total of 52 trains. Under this system, when passengers book instant tickets at the reservation counter, they receive an OTP on the mobile number provided in the reservation form. In the coming days, this OTP-based instant reservation system will be implemented for all remaining trains. The aim of this initiative is to prevent misuse of instant facilities and ensure that genuine travelers have better access to high-demand tickets. This marks a significant step towards enhancing transparency, passenger convenience, and security in railway ticketing.
Upcoming Changes to Reservation Workflow
In parallel with these improvements, Indian Railways is preparing to implement a significant change in its reservation workflow by preparing charts eight hours before train departures. The current four-hour window often leaves passengers uncertain, especially those traveling from remote or suburban areas. The new system, approved by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, will be rolled out in phases to avoid disruptions and provide quicker clarity on waitlist status, giving travelers more time to make alternative travel plans.
