Bipartisan Delegation Meets U.S. Officials
A bipartisan parliamentary delegation from India, led by senior Congress member Shashi Tharoor, recently met with prominent U.S. lawmakers and officials to discuss the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and India's response through Operation Sindoor. During this visit, the delegation held a significant meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who expressed strong support for India's fight against terrorism.
The delegation aimed to inform U.S. officials about India's stance following the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. They met with Landau on Friday, providing key insights into the operation, which targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir after the attack on April 22.
Details of the Pahalgam Attack
The Pahalgam attack resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives. The Indian Embassy stated on social media that the meeting with Deputy Secretary Landau was productive, with the delegation detailing the brutality of the Pahalgam attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor. Landau described the discussions with Indian parliamentary representatives as 'excellent.'
He reiterated America's steadfast support for India in the fight against terrorism and highlighted discussions on expanding trade and commercial relations to enhance the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
According to a statement from the State Department, Landau confirmed America's strong backing for India in combating terrorism and emphasized the importance of advancing bilateral relations in key areas, including economic development and prosperity. The delegation also discussed India's firm resolve to combat all forms of cross-border terrorism during their meeting.
Landau affirmed America's commitment to supporting India in its fight against terrorism, and both sides engaged in extensive discussions on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Engagement with U.S. Senators
The delegation also met with Senator Chris Van Hollen, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to discuss the threat of terrorism emanating from Pakistan, which affects both India and the U.S. The senator expressed sympathy for the victims of repeated terrorist attacks in India and reaffirmed America's support for India in its counter-terrorism efforts, endorsing New Delhi's right to self-defense.
Tharoor also had a warm and meaningful phone conversation with Senator Cory Booker from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
