Indian Para-Archery Coach Sentenced to Five Years for Sexual Offences
Court Ruling on Kuldeep Vedwan
Kuldeep Vedwan, the coach for India's para-archery team, has been sentenced to five years in prison by a Fast Track Special Court located in Sonipat, Haryana. This decision was made following his conviction under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on May 21.
Vedwan faced charges under sections 10 (aggravated sexual assault) and 12 (sexual harassment) of the POCSO Act, in addition to Section 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). After the court's ruling, he was immediately taken into judicial custody by Additional Sessions Judge Narendra Singh.
In addition to the five-year prison term, the court has also imposed a fine of INR 15,000, marking a significant conclusion to a case that has deeply affected the Indian sports community.
Case Background
The allegations against Kuldeep Vedwan date back to April 2023, when a student of his reported harassment during the junior national selection trials. The incident occurred on April 7, 2023, at 4 AM, when Vedwan entered the hotel room of a 17-year-old junior national-level archer and made inappropriate advances.
After resisting for about 20 minutes, the young athlete managed to escape to a fellow female player's room for safety. Despite the psychological trauma from the incident, she showed remarkable strength by traveling to Singapore shortly after to represent India at the Asia Cup.
Upon returning home from the international event, she confided in her family about the distressing experience, leading to the filing of an FIR at the Murthal police station in August 2023. This complaint initiated significant repercussions within the Indian sports sector, particularly due to Vedwan's prominent role and his connections with elite para-athletes.
Consequences and Legal Proceedings
Following the FIR and subsequent investigation, Kuldeep Vedwan was dismissed from his position at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Complex in Katra, where he had played a crucial role in establishing an archery academy and training successful para-archers.
The three-year legal battle concluded with the Fast Track Special Court in Sonipat holding Vedwan accountable for his actions, ensuring justice for the young athlete.

Kuldeep Vedwan hails from Dhanaura Tikri village in Uttar Pradesh, where he grew up in a farming family. His early passion for traditional sports led him to pursue professional archery. At 16, he joined the Indian Army, serving for 12 years and eventually becoming a National Gold Medalist in archery.
After leaving military service, Vedwan dedicated himself to coaching, aiming to develop grassroots talent across India. In 2012, he founded the Vedwan Archery Academy in his hometown, creating a training environment that produced competitive archers.
He expanded his influence by establishing training centers in various regions, including the Ashoka Archery Academy in Puducherry. His prominence grew when he joined the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Complex, where he focused on coaching differently-abled archers.
Under his mentorship, athletes like Sheetal Devi, Rakesh Kumar, and Payal Nag achieved significant international success, earning medals at the World Para Archery Championships and the Para-Asian Games. However, his achievements are now overshadowed by the serious nature of his actions and the ensuing legal consequences.
