Indian Oil Tanker Reaches Home Waters

In the context of escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, the Indian oil tanker "Desh Garima" has successfully traversed the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and has now safely arrived in Indian waters. This vessel, carrying a significant cargo of crude oil, is currently anchored a few nautical miles off the coast of Mumbai. It departed from the Hormuz region on April 18 and reportedly continued its journey despite coming under fire from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) while navigating this narrow waterway. The tanker, flying the Indian flag, has a crew of 31 Indian members onboard. Its safe arrival is viewed as a major relief, especially amid concerns regarding disruptions in global oil supply and rising fuel prices due to increasing tensions in West Asia.

This tanker marks the tenth Indian-flagged vessel to pass through the Strait of Hormuz since the beginning of March. This indicates that maritime traffic continues despite the rising tensions in the region. India has clearly stated its position on the safety of commercial vessels and sailors, urging Iran to ensure the safe passage of Indian ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Historically, Iran has assisted India in navigating changing geopolitical conditions and overcoming oil crises amid conflicts. India and Iran have maintained strong historical ties.

It is important to note that the IRGC has previously fired upon two other Indian vessels, VLCC Sanmar Herald and bulk carrier Jag Arnav, while they were attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz; this led to both vessels having to turn back. India lodged a strong protest regarding these incidents. However, no crew members aboard the vessels were injured. This was the first instance where Iranian security forces targeted an Indian ship amid the conflict that flared up following attacks on Iran by the US and Israel on February 28.
