Craig Fulton, the head coach of the Indian men's hockey team, emphasized that each player is eager to carve out their own legacy at the forthcoming FIH Hockey World Cup. The team is determined to restore pride to the nation, focusing on one match at a time. Fulton shared these insights during a recent interview.
The FIH Men's Hockey World Cup is set to take place from August 14 to 30 in Belgium and the Netherlands. India qualified directly for the tournament after clinching the men's Asia Cup on home turf last year. The team finds itself in Pool D, competing against England, Wales, and their long-standing rivals, Pakistan.
Historical Context and Recent Performance
India last tasted World Cup success in 1975, defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the final, but has not secured the title in the past 50 years. Following a ninth-place finish in the 2023 edition held in Bhubaneswar, the team is now aiming for gold, buoyed by their recent achievements, including two consecutive Olympic bronze medals, an Asia Cup title, and two Asian Champions Trophy victories.

In his remarks, Fulton noted the high expectations surrounding Indian hockey, given its illustrious history of Olympic gold medals and a World Cup trophy. He stated, "Every time India plays, there is an expectation to win. We share that ambition and aim to be competitive in every tournament."
Currently ranked eighth in the world, Fulton mentioned that the team has a "six percent chance" of winning the tournament, but they are focused on taking it one game at a time. He added, "We cannot play the final now; we can only focus on the next opponent and build momentum gradually."

India concluded the FIH Men's Pro League in eighth place, facing challenges during the home leg in Rourkela, where they lost to Belgium and Argentina. However, they showed signs of improvement during the Hobart leg, managing draws against Spain and Australia.
The team's defensive performance improved significantly, conceding only six goals in four matches. As they progressed to Europe, India achieved notable victories against Germany and the Netherlands, showcasing a shift in their attacking strategy.
