The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 Chess tournament is reaching a critical point as the playoffs approach. On Thursday, Indian Grandmasters Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin, and Pranesh M will compete in the Lower Bracket (LB) after a thrilling first day in Group A. Only two players from each group's LB will advance to the playoffs, making it essential for the Indian trio to perform well on the second day of the Group Stage to keep their championship aspirations alive, as stated in a press release from EWC.

Group A: Day 1 Highlights

Arjun, representing Gen.G Esports, kicked off his tournament with a 2-0 win against fellow Indian Nihal from S8UL Esports, mirroring their matchup from last year's EWC Group Stage. However, his journey in the Upper Bracket (UB) ended against Alireza Firouzja from Team Falcons, who won a tightly contested match after a 1-1 tie, securing his spot in the playoffs. Nihal, following his defeat, moved to the Lower Bracket.

Pranesh, Nihal's teammate at S8UL, also faced a setback, losing 2-0 to Nodirbek Abdusattor of Natus Vincere. Abdusattor later secured his playoff position with another 2-0 victory over Jan-Krzysztof Duda from Weibo Gaming.

Group B: Carlsen and Nakamura Progress

In Group B, defending champion Magnus Carlsen from Team Liquid began his title defense with a 1.5-0.5 win over Andrey Esipenko of Virtus.pro, followed by another victory against Hans Moke Niemann from GodLike Esports, also by 1.5-0.5, ensuring his place in the playoffs.

Hikaru Nakamura, Carlsen's teammate at Team Falcons, also advanced after defeating Alexey Sarana from Fnatic and Denis Lazavik from AG.AL, both with scores of 1.5-0.5.

Lower Bracket Matches: Path to Playoffs

The LB matches will determine the final playoff qualifiers from both groups. In Group A, Nihal will compete against Wei Yi from Team Nemesis, while Pranesh will face Benjamin Bok from Team MGD1. The winners will then meet Arjun and Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the LB deciders, where the last qualification spots will be contested.

In Group B, Esipenko will challenge Ian Nepomniachtchi from Aurora Gaming, and Sina Movahed from Team Stallions will take on Sarana. The winners of these matches will then face Denis and Hans in the deciders.

Playoffs Structure and Prize Pool

Scheduled for August 14 and 15, the playoffs will feature a single-elimination format. The quarterfinals will consist of four games, followed by semifinals played over six games. The Grand Final will be determined through a best-of-three sets format, with the first two sets comprising four games each, and a potential third set consisting of two games.

With four of the eight playoff spots already filled, the remaining competitors will vie for the last four positions and a chance to compete for the title, along with a share of the impressive $1.5 million (~INR 14.3 crore) prize pool.
