Indian Golfers Shine at Singapore Open with Impressive Performances
Indian Highlights at Singapore Open
Gaganjeet Bhullar, a prominent figure from AM Green IGPL, showcased an impressive performance with a steady 4-under par round, marking a highlight for India at the Singapore Open.
Shiv Kapur also made headlines with a remarkable hole-in-one, becoming a major talking point for the Indian team on the opening day of the tournament.
Tournament Leaders Set Early Pace
The US$ 2 million International Series event saw Thailand's Ekpharit Wu and Japan's Jeongwoo Ham take the lead in the first round, both scoring 7-under 64s at the par-71 Serapong course located at Sentosa Golf Club. Wu, accompanied by his wife Pam, played a flawless round, while Ham recorded eight birdies alongside a single bogey, leading by two strokes.
Bhullar's Bogey-Free Round
In pursuit of his 12th victory on the Asian Tour, Bhullar, a four-time IGPL champion, began his round from the 10th tee. He started cautiously with eight consecutive pars before making his first birdie on the 18th hole, which was his ninth hole. He added three more birdies on the back nine at the 1st, 4th, and 7th holes, finishing with a 4-under 67, placing him tied for 6th after the first round.
Bhullar on Consistency and Strategy
After his round on a particularly hot and humid day, Bhullar expressed satisfaction with his consistent play, stating, "I played good golf today, I was in the game throughout the 18 holes." Regarding his strategy for the upcoming rounds, he mentioned, "I would love to continue the form and just multiply my belief for the next three rounds." He emphasized the importance of mental strength and precision in all aspects of the game at Sentosa Golf Club.
Kapur's Ace Lights Up the Day
Shiv Kapur stole the spotlight with a hole-in-one on the par-3 second hole, using an 8-iron on the 168-yard hole for his first ace on the Asian Tour.
Reflecting on his achievement, Kapur shared, "I've been playing on the Asian Tour for about 22 years, and I've never had a hole-in-one out here, so that's my first." Despite facing challenges with two double bogeys and two bogeys, finishing 4-over for the day, he noted, "The hole-in-one at least put a bit of a smile on my face, a small silver lining on what was otherwise a tough day. That's golf -- it takes a bit from you and gives a bit back. At least I walk away with something positive."
