Sahith Theegala and Aaron Rai are set to lead the Indian contingent at this week's Wyndham Championship, marking the conclusion of the PGA Tour's regular season. Meanwhile, Akshay Bhatia and Sudarshan Yellamaraju have chosen to forgo this tournament to focus on the upcoming FedExCup Playoffs. All four players have already secured their spots within the top 70 of the FedExCup standings, ensuring their participation in the initial playoff event. The playoffs commence with 70 players, narrowing down to 50 for the second event, and ultimately to 30 for the Tour Championship.
Theegala's Inspiring Comeback
Theegala, a 28-year-old golfer of Indian descent, enters this week following an impressive comeback season. After an injury-plagued 2025 that prevented him from competing in the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time, he has regained his fitness and confidence, re-establishing himself as a reliable performer on the PGA Tour. The 6-foot-3 Californian is also motivated by his upcoming wedding.
In 2026, Theegala has achieved notable results, including top-10 finishes at The American Express (T8), Farmers Insurance Open (T7), Arnold Palmer Invitational (T6), and Texas Children's Houston Open (T10). He also showcased his skills at the US Open, finishing tied for 11th.
Rai Aims for Continued Success
Aaron Rai, currently ranked 35th in the FedExCup standings, will join Theegala at Sedgefield Country Club. Rai has fond memories of this event, having won the Wyndham Championship in 2024. Earlier this year, he achieved a significant milestone by winning the PGA Championship, making him the first British golfer in over a century to do so and the first player of Indian descent to win a men's major championship. Known for his friendly demeanor, Rai, who is married to Indian golfer Gaurika, is eager to build on his success as he heads into the playoffs.
Opening Round Pairings
In the opening round on Thursday, Rai will start from the 10th tee alongside Tom Kim and J.T. Poston, while Theegala will tee off from the first hole with rising star Jackson Koivun and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama.
