Evacuation Efforts Underway

The Indian Embassy in Iran has announced plans to evacuate citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka at the request of their respective governments, as tensions between Israel and Iran escalate. The embassy stated, "In response to requests from the governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, our evacuation efforts will also include their citizens." Additionally, emergency contact numbers have been provided for the nationals of both countries.


India initiated Operation Sindhu, a significant mission aimed at bringing back its citizens from West Asia, following unprecedented attacks on Tehran under Operation Rising Lion, which targeted military and nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic.


According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), over 500 Indian nationals have returned home from Iran as part of Operation Sindhu. The ministry shared updates about the evacuation campaign on social media. Following the escalation of military confrontations with Israel, Indian citizens, including students evacuated from Iran, arrived in Delhi late Friday and early Saturday. The announcement to commence Operation Sindhu was made by India on Wednesday.


Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on social media, stating, "A flight under Operation Sindhu has successfully brought back Indian citizens to their homeland."


In total, 290 Indian nationals, including students and pilgrims, were evacuated from Iran on a special flight that landed in New Delhi at 11:30 PM on June 20, where they were welcomed by Secretary Arun Chatterjee. Another post provided information about an evacuation flight arriving from Turkmenistan.


He confirmed that Operation Sindhu is ongoing, with a special evacuation flight arriving in New Delhi from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, at 3 AM last night. To date, 517 Indian citizens have returned home under Operation Sindhu.
