Tribute to Air India Crash Victims
On Thursday, prior to the commencement of their intra-squad match, the Indian cricket team paid tribute to the victims of the Air India plane crash that occurred on June 12 in Ahmedabad. Players observed a minute of silence as a mark of respect. During the third day of the World Test Championship final, where Australia faced South Africa, the players wore black armbands on the field to honor those affected by the tragedy.
The Air India flight, which was en route from Ahmedabad to London, tragically crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft was carrying 242 individuals, including passengers and crew members. Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The passenger list included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Remarkably, Ramesh Vishwas, a British citizen of Indian descent, was the sole survivor and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that players and support staff participating in the intra-squad match in Beckenham wore black armbands. The statement emphasized that a minute of silence was observed to pay respects to the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir, Test captain Shubman Gill, and seasoned players KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, who are part of the England tour, expressed their sorrow regarding the incident through social media posts on Thursday.
