Indian Coach Backs Struggling Openers Ahead of Crucial T20 Match
Support for Key Players Before Zimbabwe Clash
As India gears up for a critical T20 World Cup match against Zimbabwe, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has expressed confidence in the struggling opener Abhishek Sharma and number three batter Tilak Varma, urging them to perform well in the upcoming games.
Must-Win Situation After South Africa Loss
Following a disappointing 76-run defeat to South Africa in Ahmedabad, India is in a must-win situation against Zimbabwe. The team is also hoping for South Africa to remain unbeaten in the Super Eight stage.
Top-Order Struggles Highlighted
The lack of form from Abhishek and Tilak, especially against off-spin bowling, has significantly impacted India's performance during the Super Eight phase, revealing their weaknesses with each match.
Fans were eager to see Abhishek, the world number one batter, score after three consecutive ducks. Although he managed to score 15 runs off 12 balls against South Africa, his innings was brief and marked by aggressive swings that failed to yield results.
Tilak's Performance Under Scrutiny
Tilak Varma has accumulated some runs, but his strike rate of just over 118 raises concerns. He has scored only 107 runs in five innings, averaging around 21.
Kotak's Optimism for Abhishek
"We lost just one match, and it was a good performance from them. Our batting was subpar. Abhishek showed promise in the last game; focusing too much on one player adds unnecessary pressure. Our goal is to keep him mentally strong. When he was scoring heavily, no one questioned his game. Once he finds his rhythm again, the old Abhishek will return. While I can't guarantee his performance in the next match, I believe he is close to a big score," Sitanshu stated.
Defending Tilak's Approach
Sitanshu also defended Tilak's strike rate, explaining that his 25 runs off 24 balls against Pakistan were part of a strategic plan aimed at achieving a target of 175 or more on a challenging Colombo pitch. "Our strategy was sound. Ishan provided a solid start, and after that, no team wants to lose several wickets quickly. Tilak just needs a couple of boundaries to change the game. Sometimes, the right balls don't come his way. I don't see any issue with his strike rate; it depends on the match situation and partnerships," he concluded.
