Promising Start for Indian Boxing
Indian boxing has kicked off its Commonwealth Games journey on a high note, with Lovlina Borgohain securing a spot in the women's 75kg semi-finals, ensuring at least a medal. The focus now shifts to the next wave of Indian athletes, including IIS-supported boxers Sachin Siwach, Preeti Pawar, and Kapil Pokhariya.
Sachin Siwach Takes the Lead
Sachin Siwach is set to be the first of the IIS trio to compete, starting his men's 60kg campaign on July 25, as per a recent announcement. The 26-year-old is one of India's top amateur boxers, entering the competition with impressive momentum after becoming the first Indian male boxer to clinch gold at the 2025 World Boxing Cup Finals. This year, he has added gold medals from the Grand Prix Usti nad Labem in the Czech Republic and the BOXAM Elite International Tournament in Spain, along with a silver at the 2026 Asian Boxing Championships. Siwach is recognized for his technical skills and control in the ring, making him a strong contender for a medal in Glasgow.
Preeti Pawar's Quest for Victory
Preeti Pawar is set to commence her women's 54kg journey from the Round of 16 after receiving a bye in the first round. The Paris Olympian arrives at the Commonwealth Games following a stellar season, having won gold at the 2026 Asian Boxing Championships by defeating a three-time world champion in the final. She also topped the podium at the World Boxing Cup Finals and the EUBC Gold Grand Prix earlier this year. The 22-year-old from Bhiwani aims to maintain her excellent form in Glasgow.
Kapil Pokhariya Steps into the Ring
Kapil Pokhariya will also kick off his Commonwealth Games journey in the men's 90kg Round of 16. The IIS-supported heavyweight has emerged as a prominent figure in his category, having secured silver at the Grand Prix Usti nad Labem and gold at the National Games, which led to his selection for both the Commonwealth and Asian Games this year.
