Indian Badminton Teams Shine in Asia Championships
Indian Men's Team Triumphs Over Singapore
The Indian men's badminton team faced a tough challenge from Singapore but emerged victorious, while the women's team showcased dominance against Myanmar in their opening matches at the Badminton Asia Team Championships held in Qingdao, China, on Wednesday.
In a nail-biting encounter in Group C, former world number one Kidambi Srikanth delivered an impressive performance, defeating Jia Wei Joel Koh with scores of 21-15 and 21-16. This victory secured a winning start for the Indian men's team, ensuring their place in the quarterfinals, especially since Singapore had previously lost to Japan 1-4.
The campaign began on a shaky note for India as Lakshya Sen fell to former world champion Loh Kean Yew with scores of 21-16, 19-21, and 21-16. However, the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty quickly leveled the score with a commanding win over Eng Keat Wesley Koh and Junsuke Kubo, finishing 21-10, 21-8. Following this, Ayush Shetty secured a win against Jia Heng Jason Teh, with scores of 21-17, 21-15, putting India ahead.
The second doubles pair, Pruthvi Roy and K Sai Pratheek, nearly clinched the match for India after winning the first game against Nge Joo Jie and Donovan Willard Wee but ultimately lost in a close contest with scores of 21-8, 21-23, 20-22.
This left Srikanth with the crucial task of defeating Koh, which he accomplished with style.
Women's Team Dominates Myanmar
In the women's competition, the defending champions India faced no significant hurdles against Myanmar. World junior championship silver medalist Tanvi Sharma set the tone with a solid win over Thet Htar Thuzar, finishing with scores of 21-13, 21-16. The Indian team continued their strong performance by winning all remaining singles and doubles matches.
India is set to face Thailand in their next group match on Thursday, which will determine the group winner.
