Support from Institutions Boosts Athletes

Indian squash player Shameena Riaz and sailor Nethra Kumanan have both expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the backing they received from their universities during their athletic journeys. They noted that this encouragement has inspired them to strive for greater success on both national and international stages. In a conversation with a news outlet, Shameena Riaz shared her pride in winning a bronze medal for India, highlighting the significance of this achievement, especially in light of her father's past successes in the sport. She remarked, "Securing a bronze medal for India fills me with pride. In the realm of squash, this is one of the most important events. My father has previously earned both gold and silver medals, so following in his footsteps—even with a bronze—is an incredible feeling." Currently enrolled at SRM, she acknowledged the institution's extensive support, stating that the recognition and financial reward from the university would further motivate her to strive for more medals for her country, state, and college. "As a student at SRM, I have received immense support in every possible way. They have honored us and provided a significant cash reward, which encourages us to work harder and achieve more for our country, state, and college," she added. Shameena emphasized her current focus on rigorous training for upcoming competitions, saying, "I am dedicating myself entirely to training so that I can excel in future events and secure victories."

This support is what allows us to excel and achieve success," Nethra remarked. Discussing her future ambitions, she mentioned that her primary goal is to assist India in qualifying for the Olympic Games. "My next objective is to help India secure a spot in the Olympics. There are several events scheduled for January, and I will begin my training next week. The ultimate aim is to return from the Olympics with a noteworthy achievement," she concluded.
