On Wednesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed his congratulations to Indian athletes Harjinder Kaur and Gulveer Singh for their remarkable achievements in securing silver medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He praised all athletes who have represented the nation with pride.


During his address in the Parliament's Monsoon Session, Birla conveyed his sincere congratulations and best wishes to the athletes, their coaches, and Team India. He stated, "Harjinder Kaur and Gulveer Singh have brought glory to India in the ongoing 23rd Commonwealth Games by winning silver medals. On behalf of the House, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all the athletes who have brought honour to the nation, as well as to their coaches and Team India."

Additionally, Harjinder Kaur secured a silver in weightlifting, while three Indian boxers advanced to the semifinals, guaranteeing at least three more medals for the nation.


Gulveer Singh's Groundbreaking 10,000m Silver

Gulveer Singh emerged as the standout performer, clinching silver in the men's 10,000m with an impressive time of 27:49.78. The Army athlete maintained his position within the leading group throughout the race and executed a powerful sprint in the final lap, finishing just behind Australia's Ky Robinson. This silver medal marks a significant milestone, as it is India's first podium finish in the men's 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games.


Harjinder Kaur's Weightlifting Silver Achievement

Harjinder Kaur kicked off Day 6 for India by winning a silver medal in the women's 69kg weightlifting category. The athlete from Punjab achieved a personal best total of 227kg, which included lifts of 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk, finishing second to Canada's Charlotte Simoneau. Harjinder also made headlines by breaking the Commonwealth Games snatch record twice, improving upon the bronze medal she earned at the Birmingham 2022 Games.
