President Congratulates Medal-Winning Athletes

On Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu expressed her congratulations to Indian athletes Sharmila Dhankar, Shilpa K Shyla, Valluri Ajaya Babu, and Sarvesh Anil Kushare for their remarkable achievements at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.

Historic Gold for Sharmila Dhankar

In a post shared by Rashtrapati Bhavan on X, the President celebrated Sharmila Dhankar's gold medal victory in the women's shot put F57 event. This achievement marks a historic moment as she becomes India's first-ever gold medallist in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games. The President stated, "Heartiest congratulations to Sharmila Dhankar on winning the Gold Medal in the Women's Shot Put F57 event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. By becoming India's first-ever Commonwealth Games Gold medallist in Para Athletics, you have achieved a landmark feat. Your achievement will inspire young athletes to excel in their chosen fields. I wish you many more laurels in the years to come."

Recognition for Shilpa K Shyla

The President also acknowledged Shilpa K Shyla for her bronze medal in the women's shot put F57 event, commending her determination and wishing her success in future competitions. "Congratulations to Shilpa K Shyla for winning the Bronze Medal in the Women's Shot Put F57 event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your resolve and perseverance are an inspiration to all. My best wishes for your future endeavours," the President remarked.

Silver Medals for Valluri Ajaya Babu and Sarvesh Anil Kushare

President Murmu further congratulated Valluri Ajaya Babu for earning silver in the men's 79kg weightlifting event, praising his exceptional performance and determination. "India's impressive run in Weightlifting continues! Heartiest congratulations to Valluri Ajaya Babu on securing the Silver Medal in the Men's 79kg Weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your determination and exceptional performance have brought immense pride to the nation. Wishing you many more laurels," she stated.

Additionally, she congratulated high jumper Sarvesh Anil Kushare for clinching silver in the men's high jump event, expressing her hopes for his future achievements. "Hearty congratulations to Sarvesh Anil Kushare for clinching the Silver Medal in the Men's High Jump event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. With your excellent performance, you have made India proud. My best wishes to you for many more inspiring feats," the President added.

India's Medal Count Reaches 10

India had a successful Day 5 at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing four medals and bringing the total medal count to 10. The standout moment was Sharmila Dhankar's gold in the women's shot put F57, making her the first Indian to achieve this in para athletics. Shilpa K. Shyla's bronze was confirmed after a Nigerian athlete's disqualification, resulting in a double podium finish for India. In athletics, Sarvesh Kushare won silver in the men's high jump, while Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Satyanathan qualified for the long jump final. Weightlifting contributed three more medals, with Gyaneshwari Yadav winning silver, Bindyarani Devi taking bronze, and Valluri Ajaya Babu securing silver. Progress was also made in boxing and swimming, with several athletes advancing in their events, although some, including Tejas Shirse and Sumit Kundu, were eliminated. So far, India's medal tally includes golds from Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila Dhankar, alongside five silvers and three bronzes across weightlifting, athletics, and para powerlifting.
