Grand Send-Off for the Indian Contingent
On Tuesday, the Indian team for the Asian Games 2026 was warmly sent off in New Delhi, with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, in attendance. Alongside him were Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, Secretary (Sports) Hari Ranjan Rao, and Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav, who revealed the official jersey for the contingent in front of athletes and support personnel.
Mandaviya's Encouragement to Athletes
During the event, Mandaviya encouraged the athletes to transform pressure into performance, viewing their competitors as opportunities to achieve success. He expressed his confidence in the contingent's ability to excel at the Asian Games, stating, "I firmly believe that our team will enhance the nation's pride."
He emphasized that the success of athletes reflects the success of the nation, noting that the contingent comprises 503 members, and he is optimistic about their performance.
Focus on Emerging Talent
Mandaviya highlighted the increasing talent pool in Indian sports, mentioning that over 300 of the 503 athletes are participating in the Asian Games for the first time. He praised India's achievements at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, where the country secured 13 gold medals, and noted that the current selection process has been transparent and merit-based, involving open trials and independent monitoring.
Vision for the 2036 Olympics
Mandaviya acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for enhancing Indian sports, stating that the government is paving the way for athletes to thrive on the global stage. He outlined a 10-year plan aimed at establishing India firmly in the international sports arena by 2036, with an investment of over Rs 36,000 crore to upgrade sports infrastructure.
PT Usha's Remarks on Responsibility
PT Usha, speaking at the event, remarked that a sporting journey is defined not only by medals but also by aspirations. She emphasized the honor and responsibility of representing India, expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports for their unwavering support.
The Asian Games 2026 will feature the Indian contingent competing in various sports disciplines in Japan, with a significant number of first-time participants, showcasing the expanding talent and strength of Indian sports.
