Indian Athletes Celebrate Independence Day with Heartfelt Messages
Patriotic Greetings from Indian Sports Icons
On Saturday, Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli joined fellow athletes in celebrating Independence Day by sharing a heartfelt message on his Instagram Story. He posted a graphic that showcased the Indian tricolor alongside the iconic Red Fort, conveying his best wishes for the occasion.
Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra also took to social media to express his sentiments about the day. He reminisced about the emotional experience of witnessing the national flag being raised, stating, "I'll never forget standing there and watching the tricolor rise. This Independence Day, my hope is that every child in India has the right and opportunity to play. Because play is joy. Play is freedom. And every child deserves both." Bindra made history in 2008 by winning India's first individual Olympic gold in the men's 10-meter air rifle event.
Bajrang Punia, who secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, also shared his Independence Day wishes, emphasizing the importance of the national flag. He wrote, "August 15 -- Independence Day. The tricolor is not just our identity; it is a symbol of our struggle, honor, and pride. We have fought for the country, and we will continue to fight for the country. Jai Hind! Vande Mataram!"
India's Remarkable Performance at Commonwealth Games 2026
India recently concluded its campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, achieving an impressive total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze, which placed them fourth overall. This achievement is notable given that the event featured a reduced program, omitting traditional medal-winning sports like wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey, and shooting.
Despite these challenges, Indian athletes excelled in boxing, judo, weightlifting, and para sports. Among the standout performers were female boxers Jaismine Lamboria, Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghanghas, Sakshi Chaudhary, and Arundhati Choudhary, as well as weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, judoka Asmita Dey, and para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar. Notably, India's boxing team achieved a historic milestone by securing 10 medals, marking the best performance in this category at the Commonwealth Games, surpassing the previous record of six golds held by England and Canada.
