Historic Achievement for India in Space Exploration
After launching from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has made history by becoming the first Indian astronaut to reach the International Space Station (ISS). This milestone was achieved as the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission successfully docked with the orbiting laboratory on Thursday. This event symbolizes a triumphant return for India in human spaceflight, occurring 41 years after Rakesh Sharma's pioneering mission in 1984.
Before docking, the Dragon spacecraft had to meticulously synchronize its orbit with that of the ISS to match both position and velocity. This intricate process, known as rendezvous, involved a series of highly precise maneuvers to align and connect the capsule with the station. Initially, a 'soft capture' was confirmed, indicating a flexible initial contact that safely absorbed the spacecraft's kinetic energy. Moments later, NASA's mission control confirmed a 'hard capture,' securing the capsule to the ISS's Harmony module.
As Shubhanshu Shukla stepped onto the International Space Station, his proud family watched from Earth, eagerly anticipating a celebration of this historic achievement with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath later today. Serving as the mission pilot, Shukla was joined by NASA's mission commander Peggy Whitson, Polish mission specialist Sławosz Użnanski, and Hungarian astronaut Tibor Káposzta. Notably, this mission also marked the first time astronauts from Poland and Hungary reached the ISS.
In an emotional message sent from orbit before docking, Shukla greeted Indians with a heartfelt 'hello from space' and expressed pride in carrying the hopes of 1.4 billion people on his shoulders. He stated, "Floating in zero gravity is indescribable. It’s a wonderful, humbling feeling. I want to thank everyone who made this possible. This is not just my achievement; it’s a collective accomplishment shared by many back home." He also carried a soft toy swan, symbolizing wisdom in Indian culture.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh remarked that while other governments may have had their priorities set, they might not have recognized the global needs or envisioned India's role on the world stage, which has evolved since 2014. Prime Minister Modi has been clear that India must align with global strategies and operate according to international standards, rather than solely domestic ones. Thus, a spirit of healthy competition is essential for India to reach its goal of becoming a developed nation.
