Guwahati, April 22: On the eve of the first anniversary of the tragic Pahalgam attack, the Indian Army issued a firm warning to those involved in terrorism, emphasizing that a strong response will follow when 'boundaries of humanity are crossed.' Families of the victims continue to struggle with their grief.
In memory of the lives lost during the attack in Baisaran Valley, a memorial has been established in Pahalgam. This tribute, crafted from black marble, lists the names of the 26 victims, including 25 tourists and local ponywallah Adil Shah, and is situated along the banks of the Lidder River.
The family of N Ramachandran, one of the tourists who lost his life, expressed that their situation remains unchanged, still grappling with the aftermath of his sudden death. Ramachandran, aged 65, was on vacation in Kashmir with his family when he was tragically shot by terrorists on April 22, an incident that reverberated throughout the nation and led to the initiation of Operation Sindoor, targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan.
Arathi R Menon, who witnessed her father's murder, shared her inability to articulate her feelings about the tragedy. 'I have nothing more to say. A year has passed, and everything remains the same. I am not in a position to comment further. I apologize,' she stated.
As the anniversary approaches, the Army posted on X, stating, 'When boundaries of humanity are crossed, the response is decisive. Justice is Served. India Stands United. #SindoorAnniversary #JusticeEndures #NationFirst.' This post carried a powerful digital image of India's map with the phrase 'SOME BOUNDARIES SHOULD NEVER BE CROSSED.' The 'O' in 'CROSSED' was represented by a bowl filled with 'sindoor' (vermilion), accompanied by the tagline 'INDIA DOES NOT FORGET' in crimson.
Following the military operation, the Indian Army had previously announced on May 7 last year, 'Justice is Served. Jai Hind!' alongside a digital poster featuring 'OPERATION SINDOOR,' with one of the Os in 'SINDOOR' depicted as a bowl of sindoor.
On the same day, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde presented a newly-built house to Adil Shah's family, honoring a commitment made last year. The Shiv Sena organized a ceremony in Shah's hometown of Hapatnar, with Shinde participating virtually.
In preparation for the anniversary, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has increased police and paramilitary presence in Pahalgam, implementing stricter checks and enhanced surveillance to ensure a peaceful observance of the day. Senior officials confirmed that all necessary arrangements are in place for the event, which is anticipated to draw attendance from various politicians, civil society members, victim families, and local representatives.
