Indian Air Force Employee Arrested for Espionage Activities
Betrayal from Within: The Case of Sumit Kumar
A shocking betrayal has come to light involving an individual trusted by the entire nation, who was assigned responsibilities at an Air Force station. This person, identified as Sumit Kumar, hails from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and worked as a multitasking staff member at the Chabua Air Force Station in Assam. While he appeared to be an ordinary employee on the outside, he was secretly acting as a soldier for the enemy, selling India's missile secrets to Pakistan over the past two years. According to investigative agencies, Kumar made contact with handlers in Pakistan in 2023 and gradually succumbed to the lure of money, beginning to sell classified information about the country's missile systems. This sensitive data, which should have remained within the military, was leaked to the enemy nation.
Details of the Espionage
The investigation revealed that Kumar shared critical information, including the deployment of fighter aircraft, missile systems, and the locations and activities of Air Force stations, including NAL and Chabua. The potential damage if this information fell into the wrong hands could have been catastrophic. Furthermore, Kumar created social media accounts using his mobile number to communicate secretly with Pakistani agents, allowing the espionage network to operate without suspicion. Eventually, he was apprehended after a related arrest in Jaisalmer led investigators to his name. Following surveillance by Rajasthan Intelligence and Indian Air Force Intelligence, he was captured at the right moment.
The Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
The arrest of Jhabaram, a suspect from Jaisalmer, on January 30 accelerated the investigation into the Indian Air Force employee. Jhabaram's information led investigators to Kumar, who is believed to have misused his position to access sensitive Air Force data, including details about fighter deployments and missile systems. Pakistani handlers maintained covert contact with Kumar through fake social media accounts. The Chabua Air Force Station, located near the international borders with China and Myanmar, is considered a strategically significant defense establishment. Following Jhabaram's arrest, the investigation identified 36-year-old Sumit Kumar, currently stationed at Chabua. During questioning, he admitted to being in contact with Pakistani intelligence agents since 2023 and allegedly sharing confidential information for monetary gain. He has been brought to Jaipur for further interrogation, where multiple agencies are jointly questioning him. Authorities have filed a case under the Official Secrets Act of 1923 and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, with ongoing investigations to uncover the broader espionage network.
