India Women's Team Triumphs Over England in T20I Opener
India's Strong Start in the Series
In the opening T20I of the three-match series held at Chelmsford, India Women's stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana commended her team's collective effort following their 38-run victory against England Women. The Indian squad kicked off their tour of England with a robust performance, securing a 1-0 lead in the series. Notably, regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur was rested for this match.
Mandhana Reflects on the Match
After the match, Mandhana acknowledged that losing early wickets during the powerplay was not ideal but praised the middle-order for stabilizing the innings. She stated, "Losing two wickets in the power play was not ideal. Credit to Yastika Bhatia, who returned after an 8-month hiatus. She took the game away. Jemi (Jemimah) is doing Jemi things."
Mandhana also mentioned that the team could have aimed for a slightly higher score, adding, "We should have scored 10 more runs, though."
She emphasized the advantage of batting second, noting that fielding first allowed the team to better assess the conditions. "Fielding second is an advantage," she remarked.
Praise for the Batting Unit
The captain highlighted the contributions and composure of the batting unit, particularly the partnership between Jemimah Rodrigues and Yastika Bhatia. "We had a lot of inputs from Jemi and Yastika. All the bowlers executed their plans well and remained calm under pressure," Mandhana noted.
She also expressed admiration for young bowler Nandni Sharma, who made a significant impact with her bowling. "Nandni is a character. She has a lot of fire. She picked up crucial wickets and bowled some important overs," she added.
