Pursuing the T20 World Cup Title

The Indian women's cricket team is gearing up to capture the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 trophy, following their triumph in the home ODI World Cup last year. Shafali Verma was called up as a last-minute replacement for Pratika Rawal, who was sidelined due to injury, and played a pivotal role in securing the championship with several key performances.

Late Replacement Due to Injury

India had to make a crucial last-minute change before the knockout rounds after Rawal sustained an ankle injury during a match against Bangladesh. As the Women in Blue aim for their first ICC Women's T20 World Cup title, Smriti Mandhana discussed the impact of losing a key player at such a critical time on JioStar's 'Unstoppable'. Meanwhile, Shafali Verma shared her feelings about being initially excluded from the squad and her mindset upon receiving the call-up.

Shafali Verma Reflects on Her Journey

In her conversation on JioStar's 'Unstoppable', Verma expressed her disappointment at not being selected initially, stating, "Missing out on the World Cup squad for a tournament in India was one of the saddest feelings for me. However, I realized that everyone has their own path. The early days were tough as I faced constant questions about my absence from the team."

She continued, "Eventually, I accepted the situation and concentrated on what I could control. I sought solitude with just my brother and father, reminding myself that it was time to intensify my training. I even asked my brother to hold me accountable during practice."

Performance Highlights

Verma participated in only two matches during the World Cup. She made her debut in the semi-final against Australia, scoring a quick 10 runs off five balls while chasing a daunting target of 339. In the final against South Africa, she was named Player of the Match for her impressive 87 runs off 78 balls, helping India set a target of 299 runs. India won the match by 52 runs.

Mental Preparation for the Call-Up

Reflecting on her emotions after receiving the late call-up, Verma recounted, "I was at the hotel playing with a friend when I received a call from my manager. I wasn't closely following the team's matches, so I was unaware of the situation. He informed me about Pratika's injury and my need to step in."

She added, "I felt sympathy for her, as no athlete wishes for another to be injured. However, I quickly realized I needed to mentally prepare for a World Cup semi-final. Transitioning back into the team after nearly a year away was a significant challenge."

Mandhana Praises Shafali's Talent

India's vice-captain, Mandhana, shared her insights on the decision to include Shafali Verma as a replacement. "Having international experience was crucial, and we needed an opener. In high-stakes matches, that X-factor is essential. Everyone agreed that Shafali was the perfect choice. After her first practice session, I reassured her that she earned her spot due to her performances," she stated.

Mandhana encouraged Verma to approach the remaining games as if they were domestic matches, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the experience, especially in the semi-final and final.
