India vs Pakistan: Tension Builds Ahead of Asian Games Cricket Final
India and Pakistan Clash in Asian Games Cricket Final
In a highly anticipated showdown, India and Pakistan are set to face off in the men's cricket final at the 2026 Asian Games, taking place in Nishin, Japan. However, the traditional handshake between Indian captain Shreyas Iyer and Pakistani captain Sahibzada Farhan was notably absent during the toss, as both players focused on their teams' preparations.
Absence of Handshake During Toss
India won the toss and opted to bat first. The lack of a handshake between Iyer and Farhan drew attention, especially given the recent history of similar encounters where this gesture has been a point of discussion.
Reports indicate that since last year's Asia Cup, handshakes have been omitted in India-Pakistan cricket matches. Nevertheless, both teams are concentrating on the game and the coveted gold medal.
No Changes in India's Playing XI
The Indian team has maintained its playing XI from the semi-final against Sri Lanka, showing confidence in the same lineup for the final against Pakistan.
The squad includes players such as Vaibhav SuryaVanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, and Jasprit Bumrah. The 15-year-old Vaibhav SuryaVanshi will once again open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma.
Pakistan Makes One Change
Pakistan has made a single change to its playing XI, bringing in Saad Masood in place of Mohammad Wasim Jr. Sahibzada Farhan leads the team as captain.
Path to the Final for Both Teams
India secured its place in the final by defeating Sri Lanka by 124 runs in the semi-finals. Batting first, India scored 170 runs, while Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 45 runs. Ishan Kishan played a crucial role with an unbeaten 80 runs, supported by strong bowling performances from Jasprit Bumrah and Abhishek Sharma.
On the other hand, Pakistan advanced to the final by overcoming Bangladesh by six wickets in a rain-affected semi-final. This marks the first time that India and Pakistan will compete against each other in the men's cricket final at the Asian Games.
Gold Medal on the Line for India and Pakistan
India aims to defend its gold medal in men's cricket at the Asian Games, having previously won it in 2023. For Pakistan, this is their inaugural final in men's cricket at the Asian Games.
While the absence of a handshake has garnered attention, the primary focus for both teams remains on securing the gold medal. India has shown faith in its semi-final squad, while Pakistan enters the final with one adjustment.
