India U17 Women's Football Team Concludes Russia Tour with Valuable Lessons
Final Match Overview
The India U17 women's football squad wrapped up their tour in Russia with a 0-3 loss in their final friendly match held at the Matsesta Football Centre in Sochi on Friday.
After a scoreless first half, Russia opened the scoring just after halftime in the 46th minute with a goal from Valeria Menyailova. Polina Frolova extended the lead in the 80th minute, and Anna Bykhanova sealed the victory with a third goal in stoppage time (90+2').
India faced a setback in the 82nd minute when Julan Nongmaithem received a second yellow card, leaving the team with ten players.
Learning Experience for the Young Tigresses
Under the guidance of Italian coach Pamela Conti, the Young Tigresses utilized this three-match series as preparation for the upcoming AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup in China 2026. They had previously lost 0-4 in the first match and 0-3 in the second, making this series a challenging yet educational experience against a more physically dominant Russian team.
Defensive Improvements Noted
The first half ended without goals, showcasing an improved defensive performance from India. A moment of uncertainty nearly cost them early on when goalkeeper Munni rushed out but failed to clear effectively, allowing Mira Kuznetsova a chance that went wide.
Despite this scare, India's defense displayed better organization and discipline, effectively closing down spaces and limiting the Russian forwards' opportunities.
The Indian team also managed to restrict the hosts' wing play, forcing Russia to take long-range shots rather than creating clear chances.
Russia Takes Control After Halftime
The second half began with Russia quickly taking the lead. Just one minute in, Dana Dobrovitskaya intercepted a loose ball and delivered a precise pass to Menyailova, who scored.
Russia almost doubled their lead shortly after, but Munni made a crucial save against a shot from Dobrovitskaya.
India had their best moments in the match during the 63rd minute when a long throw from Divyani Linda led to a powerful strike from Julan Nongmaithem, which was saved by the Russian goalkeeper.
Late Goals Seal the Match for Russia
Despite some promising chances for India, Russia regained control and scored their second goal in the 80th minute. Menyailova set up Frolova, who finished with a composed strike.
India's situation worsened when Julan received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away after a foul, leaving the team down to ten players.
In stoppage time, Russia added a third goal when Alisa Klimova's cross was misjudged by Munni, allowing Bykhanova to score into an empty net.
