Commuters will need to use digital methods like FASTag or UPI, which are expected to reduce wait times and improve traffic flow. However, travelers should prepare for this change, ensuring their FASTag is active and linked to their bank account. The shift marks a significant step towards modernizing highway travel in India, making it faster and more efficient.

Complete Shift to Digital Toll Payments

New Delhi, March 31: Starting April 1, cash payments for toll fees will be eliminated across India as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) implements a fully digital payment system.

This initiative represents a significant advancement in modernizing highway travel, with a complete prohibition on cash transactions at toll plazas nationwide.

From this date, drivers will be required to pay tolls exclusively through digital methods such as FASTag or UPI.

The objective of this transition is to enhance efficiency and increase transparency in toll collection on national highways and expressways.

Officials anticipate that the all-digital approach will facilitate quicker passage through toll booths, thereby minimizing long wait times and expediting travel.

By eliminating cash lanes, authorities expect improved traffic flow, particularly during peak travel periods.

Moreover, the quicker processing at toll booths is expected to lower fuel consumption and decrease vehicle emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Nevertheless, this change may pose challenges for some travelers, especially those unaccustomed to digital payment methods.

Vehicles lacking a valid FASTag or adequate balance may incur fines or be halted at toll plazas.

In such instances, travelers can opt for immediate payments via UPI by scanning QR codes located at toll booths.

However, officials have cautioned that connectivity issues could occasionally disrupt these transactions, resulting in delays.

To prevent any inconveniences, travelers are encouraged to verify that their FASTag is active, correctly linked to their bank account, and has sufficient funds before embarking on their journey.

It is also advisable to have a functional UPI app on their smartphone as a contingency.
